La Opinión
La Opinión is an Spanish daily newspaper distributed in and around Los Angeles, California, and published since September 16, 1926 (date chosen to coincide with Mexico's Independence Day).It is the largest Spanish-language newspaper in the United States and, after the "Los Angeles Times", the second-most read newspaper in Los Angeles. The staff had control over both "La Prensa" and La Opinión until 1959 when La Prensa was sold. The actual publisher is the company "Impremedia" which also publishes "El Diario-La Prensa" in New York.
It published "Mandrake the Magician" Sunday strip from January 8, 1939 to October 10, 1957. These strips were released the same sundays as the American speaking versions. Comics characters like "El Fantasma" ("The Phantom"), "Brick Bradford", "Ace Drummond", "Nancy", "Mutt and Jeff", were also published, plus "Tarzan" as the longest comics run of the newspaper. In 1957, Mandrake has been replaced by the science-fiction series "Mundos gemelos" ("Twin Earths").
A second run of Mandrake stories - the Fred Fredericks years ... - appears from (at least) January 12, 1994 to April 5, 2006 for the "Mandrake the Magician" daily strip and May 3, 1998 to November 30, 2003 for the Sunday pages. The precise dates remain to be determined with more precision.
