Interview - A Visit with Lee Falk

From MandrakeWiki

"A Visit with Lee Falk" is an interview with Lee Falk by Anthony Tollin, made in late 1985 and published for the first time in the magazine "The Comic Buyer's Guide" #346 in 1986 for the 50th anniversary of "The Phantom".

After discussing his first work for the KMOX radio, Lee Falk talks about his early career writing radio drama for KMOX. He credits Harry J. Tuthill (1885-1957, also living - then like Lee Falk - in St. Louis, Missouri and creator of "The Bungle Family" comic strip) with encouraging him to submit "Mandrake the Magician" to King Features Syndicate.

As an inspiration for the Mandrake character, he mentions the magician Richard Cardini. (about the latter, see : [1])

He also evokes his collaboration with Phil Davis, a strong worker often helped by his wife Martha Davis. Lee also indicates that Ray Moore inks the early Phil Davis'drawings.
