In Manchester Alfred, John and Sidney Pemberton were in the business of selling second hand books. After the end of World War II they started as publishers, specializing in hardback annuals published in the autumn of each year. Unsold stock could be shipped to overseas markets such as New Zealand and Australia.
The "World Adventure Library" series was introduced in 1966 featuring sub series such as: "Batman" (11 issues), "Bonanza" (3 issues), "Flash Gordon" (7 issues), "Mandrake the Magician" (8 issues), "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" (14 issues) , "The Phantom" (8 issues), "Superman" (4 issues) and "Tarzan" (3 issues).
