History

Vidyarthi Mithram was a dealer of scientific and laboratory equipments for schools. In 1974 they started to print an Indian version (in English, Hindi and Tamil) of the Swedish Tarzan magazine by Williams Förlag AB. Vidyarthi Mithram kept the original Swedish covers, changing the Swedish story title(s) printed on the covers, but keeping the title "Tarzan, apornas son" (Tarzan, Son of the Apes). The first eight issues even kept the original the Swedish (and Finnish) price printed on the covers.

In some "Tarzan" issues and in the third "The Phantom" Tamil issue there are an ad with 16 "Tarzan" issues (up to #33). This ad mentions Vidyarthi Mithram's three "Tarzan" language editiones, "The Phantom" (in Malayalam and Tamil) and "Mandrake the Magician" (Malayalam). The same ad are found in other "Tarzan" issues without any mentions of "The Phantom" or "Mandrake", but it may be due later re-prints. The "Tarzan" issue 33 was printed in 1975 and most likly the first issues of "The Phantom" and "Mandrake" were printed mid 1975.

In "The Phantom" #10 (Malayalam edition) a back-issue ad is printed and lists: "The Phantom" (9 issues in Malayalam and Tamil) and "Mandrake" (11 issues in Malayalam and Tamil(?)). This ad also lists: "Tarzan" (English, Hindi and Tamil), "Inspector Eagle" (Malayalam), "Inspector Vikram" (Malayalam) and "Amar Chitra Katha" (Malayalam).

In "The Phantom" #12 (Malayalam edition) a back-issue ad is printed and lists: "The Phantom" (11 issues in Malayalam and Tamil) and "Mandrake" (13 issues in Malayalam). This ad also lists:

Note

Only a few of the Vidyarthi Mithram comics are known, and this article is therefore built on a limited basis. It also seems as if the various issues are printed in several editions (back issues), and that there may be different variants of the same issue. Further research is needed for the article to be as correct as possible.
