Apu is a Finnish monthly women's magazine based in Helsinski and published by A-lehdet. (The Finnish word "Apu" means "Help", the magazine being founded at a time of economic recession to help the unemployed persons).

History

The magazine was founded in 1933 by its first editor-in-chief Yrjö Lyytikäinen as a weekly publication. In the late 30's (1938 ?) it started to print the Mandrake Sundays, under the name Taika-Jim. In the early 40's APU printed Mandrake dailies, reformated to fit a page, similar as the Swedish magazine Allers Familj-Journal. In the 50's Taika-Jim was often presented on the back cover. In the mid 70's (1974 ?) started to print the half page variant (eg 4 of 6 panels) with two Sunday pages in each issue of APU, soon changing to one Sunday page in each issue. The Mandrake page was printed in black and white during the first years, in sepia between 1948 (at least) and issue # 1959/37 (12.02.1959) and in color from issue # 1959/38 (19.09.1959), with however some issues in color for some 1957 issues, until its ending run in issue # 1990/7 (17.02.1990).

Often APU have double issues of the magazine in Midsummer and Christmas.

From the issue # 25/25-1980 (June 19, 1980) to issue # 25/26-1981 (June 5, 1981) the comics were collected into a comic supplement, "Apu Sarjis", as an insert in the main magazine.
