Plot Summary

Renowned sportsman and adventurer, Nick Bliss, found himself in a predicament when his friend Ralph couldn't join their planned expedition due to urgent family matters. Spotting Mandrake at the Explorers Club, Nick invited him to fill the void on their quest for a lost treasure. With Nick's wife, Hilda, they boarded a private plane at a small airport and set course for Gironda Island, a tropical paradise on the equator. Their mission: to find a gold idol from a lost civilization hidden deep in the island's jungle.

However, Ralph and Hilda grew suspicious of Mandrake's strange behavior. He seemed disconnected, forgetting shared memories, even their wedding. Meanwhile, in New York City, Ralph bumped into Mandrake on the street, questioning why he was there instead of being on the expedition with Nick. Mandrake sensed danger; someone might have impersonated him – perhaps The Clay Camel or worse, his twin brother Derek. Fearing for Ralph and Hilda's safety, Mandrake hastily booked a ticket and headed to Gironda Island.

Upon arrival, Mandrake encountered Mr. Klegg, a professional bounty hunter, who mistook him for Derek. Klegg aimed to claim a two-million-dollar bounty offered by a wealthy dictator. Mandrake managed to escape Klegg's clutches, then using telepathy to locate the expedition. A sudden tropical storm hit, revealing the coveted idol – a deadly wheel-man from the Land of X. Facing a common enemy, Mandrake and Derek were forced to collaborate. Luck was on their side when the wheel-man was struck by lightning, incapacitating him.

Yet, challenges persisted. On their way back to civilization, Klegg and his gang lay in wait, determined to claim the hefty reward. Mandrake sacrificed his clothes and return ticket for Derek's escape. Grateful, Derek warned that Mandrake must restore his magical powers in their next encounter, or dire consequences would follow.
